Research and Development
CulturalHeritage.cc Foundation originally developed its program to support mobility of objects by publishing them on the web. To that end a system was built to digitize moveable heritage objects and to provide private access to participating cultural heritage organizations (specifically to ICN, TU-Delft, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Gemeentemuseum The Hague, Chair foundation).
Objects could be published with the full responsibility of the partner museums and, when appropriate, be offered for loan or de-accessioning.
The input from AFRICOM in 2004, in particular following their call to document intangible heritage, directed the Foundations' objective to incorporate documentation of intangible heritage into its system.
The fact that many museums did not have access to the Internet prompted the Foundation to develop the web version into a stand-alone version as well.
Following the presentation by the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA) at the Museums Association of Namibia (MAN) conference in Walvisbay, in 2006, MuseumDepot.org decided to expand its system into a contextual database that would accommodate tangible (moveable and immoveable) as well as intangible heritage in one relational database model.
